With so many things to be thankful for here in Alaska, we forget to take a step back at times and take stock of what we have. I do this often and in reflection I think of ways to maintain what the schools I serve already have and how I can capitalize on existing resources. This is important in all walks of life and throughout one’s career, but Alaska is currently at the precipice of significant changes. The price of oil and the state of the economy in general has an awful lot to do with budgets around the state and I think we should all sit up and take notice of the changes I see for the future of education.
In addition to our unique funding methods and resources, Alaska also has a distinct and somewhat unique advantage in our Senatorial Representative. As a member of the Education Committee, Senator Lisa Murkowski is in a critical position to affect change in Alaska and Washington, DC.
The US Senate is beginning its work on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind). I encourage you to take action now to fight for our students. Write your Senators and tell them how much you believe in technology in education, digital initiatives, and distance learning.
